I went out for a jog/walk today, the first since last fall.
It went well--my triathlon training has stayed with me and I still have a shred of endurance. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to jog much, but I sustained it about half the time.
Now, after coming inside, I feel healthy and sweaty.
However, I'm like a one-man band with all the stuff I clip to myself:
I have an insulin pump on my waistband.
I just got headphones for my iPod that stay on while running.
I wore sunglasses.
How do people run with their meters, glucose, keys and whatever? I have this eons-old fanny pack that's dorky and makes me look like I have an ass tumor, but I can carry everything along if I need it.
Plus, I am doing a trial of a Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitor for a week. More about this later, but I wanted to clip that to my waistband so I could watch my sugars during the exercise. My sugars were fine, but it was another weird lump under my running shirt.
Is there such a thing as a streamlined amateur athlete with diabetes?

I don't carry my ipod because I already have too much other stuff. CGM and pump go on the waistband and I use a SPIbelt (sponsor of Triabetes) or a Nathan running belt (very sleek, low profile) to carry keys, BG meter (out of case in a ziplock) and back-up sugar if I am going for a long run. (Oh long runs, how I miss you!) Anyway, I hear you loud and clear. I have just come to accept it.
I've never known anything about streamline - my body is more like a tidal wave! Add in all the gadgets we have to (and choose to) carry, and it makes for a better workout because of all the weight! :-)
i am just starting to get into running - and i was thinking the exact same thing - so much we have to carry with us!! i haven't tried the spibelt but i hear they're good for running (and i've heard they give you a discount if you tell them you're using it for diabetes purposes)
I don't have any suggestions, being one of those people who wouldn't run even if being chased, but your reference to a butt pack as an ass tumor cracked me up.
How in the world you even ran with the dexcom I don't know. I did a trial back in January and I thought it weighed a thousand pounds. I still haven't figured out a good way to have all the D-paraphernalia and be sreamlined. I agree with Scott it adds to the workout!
Oh my goodness! I can't tell you how happy I am to find this blog!
I just finished my first 1/2 marathon in March and it's so wonderful to be connected to other athletes with diabetes. My next adventure/goal is a triathon...
I usually look pretty teched-out on my runs...Arm band for my MP3 player, cord for ear phones go through my sleeve so I don't get tangled, Amphipod multi-bottle waist belt has a pouch for keys, good, glucometer, and money, insulin pump goes on the waist belt. I forego sunglasses - just one more thing. Instead, I wear a hat.
